Punk rock's (maybe even the entire genre of rock's) most beloved cover band, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes need no introduction. Since their formation back in the mid-90's, they've made their availability to play weddings and Bar Mitzvahs no secret. Weddings are simple, and that was scratched off the list early. Landing a Bar Mitzvah is a different story. The band was sure to announce their availability at every public appearance, and in every interview. It paid off and the call out to perform at a Bar Mitzvah was answered before long. It's not every day that a punk band is asked to play a Bar Mitzvah, so the band took full advantage of the opportunity and made a live record.
Play Jonny's Bar Mitzvah is not your typical live album, it's all new material, well not really "new" material, but new covers of old material. Covers that Me First and the Gimme Gimmes have never performed before! To the delight (or horror) of Jonny and the guests at his Bar Mitzvah, Me First took a stab at a wide array of tunes. From the Carpenters to Led Zeppelin, nothing is out of the reach of the mighty Gimme Gimmes! Don't think for a minute that they skipped Hava Nagila, it's in there…even to the tune of Feliz Navidad!
We know this is all very hard to believe, I mean c'mon, who's going to hire a punk cover band to play at their kid's Bar Mitzvah? In anticipation of people's disbelief they video taped the entire thing! A few songs worth of footage will be included making this an enhanced CD! At the end of the day, we had an amazing live Me First and the Gimme Gimmes album, and Jonny had a bunch of offended friends and family. Job well done! (2004)
