Introducing The Blackjacks…
Mike Wallbank (24) on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, and Pete Lawson (25) on double bass and vocal harmony. Heavily influenced by Rockabilly, country and British skiffle, The Blackjacks’ sound is at once rooted and authentic, yet uniquely contemporary. This extended-play 7” is their debut release. We first witnessed the lads on 16th January 2018, at Liverpool’s Cavern Club, playing an acoustic set for the launch party of Vee-Tone’s The Cavern Club: Jazz & Skiffle LP (VTRLP2043). Blown away by their performance, we immediately asked them to come into a studio and lay down some tracks. During sessions in April and accompanied by Chris Smith (24) on electric guitar and Steve Lawson (20) on drums, the pair proved enthusiastic, professional, hardworking, and remarkably talented; impressing us with interpretations of other artists’ songs and their own tightly-crafted, humorous material. The title track of this EP is a fresh, rockabilly-styled take on a song alleged to have been the first ever written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Though penned circa 1957-58 and recorded in an R&B style by The Beatles in 1963, the track remained officially unreleased until it was reworked for their 1970 Let It Be album. Dig this first hand dealt by The Blackjacks and bet that there’s more to come!
