DESCRIPTION

A whole book of poetry, prose, and (very) short stories on the subjects of work and school? Well, yeah!

“…Integrity, compassion and guts...read these words – some might strike a chord with you. They did with me.”
Steve Ignorant - Crass

James Domestic takes a look at the two institutions that loom largest in our lives. School is our constant companion – whether we want it to be or not – through our most formative years, doing everything in its power to prepare us for a life of toil and instil obedience to the system (maaaaan).

Then comes working life, which for many is a life-draining drudge from Monday to Friday (other days of the week are available), leaving them wondering if this is really what life is all about, whilst already knowing the answer.

Of course, this is a James Domestic book, so expect ruminations on colleagues, office sex (sometimes with humans), job interviews, heavily-embellished CVs, working at home, celebrity chefs, team building exercises, sandwiches, much-loved lexicographer Susie Dent, post-work drinks, pointless meetings, workplace bullying, dogs, and much much more.

Some of the poems in this collection - Guff CV, Homework, Phil Don’t Work Here Anymore to name but a few - have become firm live favourites, which given how relatable they are, is no surprise. Any resemblance to persons living, dead or otherwise, or actual events, is of course purely coincidental. Honest.

James Domestic grew up in Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, is a poet, punk, musician, soul and reggae DJ, songwriter, vocalist, musician, and painter. He holds a doctorate from the University of Essex, has toured the world and elsewhere with The Domestics, and made records with more bands than is healthy or sensible. He spends far too much money on records he barely has time to play.
