Formed in the early 1970s in Stockport, Manchester, 10cc brought together four exceptional songwriters and studio craftsmen: Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. Emerging from the fertile creative hub of Strawberry Studios, the quartet quickly distinguished themselves through their wit, invention and meticulous production. Blending art pop, rock and satire, they achieved international success and earned a reputation as one of Britain’s most imaginative and technically accomplished bands of the decade.
Yet success brought strain. By the time of 1976’s How Dare You!, artistic tensions within the group had deepened. Godley and Creme were increasingly drawn towards conceptual projects and studio experimentation, while Gouldman and Stewart favoured a more song-centred direction. The split became inevitable: Godley and Creme departed to pursue their own path as the duo Godley & Creme, leaving Gouldman and Stewart to carry the 10cc name forward. Rather than signalling decline, the change marked the beginning of a resilient and creatively fruitful new chapter.
As a streamlined unit, 10cc continued to enjoy both critical respect and commercial success. Albums such as Deceptive Bends (1977) and Bloody Tourists (1978) proved the durability of Gouldman and Stewart’s partnership, balancing melodic sophistication with radio appeal. This second phase reached a natural summit with 1980’s Look Hear?, an assured and polished collection that reaffirmed their standing at the dawn of a new decade. The subsequent 1980 world tour, largely centred on European dates, showcased a confident live band translating studio finesse into dynamic stage performances, reconnecting with audiences across the continent.
