The Bangles formed in Los Angeles in 1981, originally comprising Susanna Hoffs (vocals/guitars), Vicki Peterson (guitars/vocals), Debbi Peterson (vocals/drums), and Annette Zilinskas (vocals/bass). Initially known as The Bangs, the group soon changed their name to The Bangles after discovering another band had already registered the original name. Zilinskas departed in 1983 and was replaced by Michael Steele, solidifying the now-classic line-up of this influential power-pop outfit.
In 1984, The Bangles released their full-length debut album, All Over The Place, on Columbia Records. Although not a major commercial breakthrough, the album performed respectably and attracted the attention of artists such as Cyndi Lauper and Huey Lewis, who invited the group to support them on tour. These high-profile support slots helped introduce The Bangles to a broader audience along with Prince, who offered them his composition ‘Manic Monday’, originally written for Apollonia 6. The single became a significant hit and served as the lead track for The Bangles’ second album, Different Light, released in January 1986. Buoyed by a second smash single, ‘Walk Like An Egyptian’, and a shift towards a more pop-oriented sound, the album achieved widespread mainstream success, peaking at number two on the Billboard 200 chart.
