‘An Anarchy of Demons’ is the long anticipated autobiography by U.K. Subs’ legendary leader Charlie Harper. Containing 478 full-colour pages that provide a unique insight into what made him the punk icon he is today.
"The U.K. Subs are the soundtrack for so many of us. Charlie’s voice is one of a kind. He’s our voice of the voiceless. He’s our elder statesman. He’s our King of Punk. Long live the king."
- LARS FREDERIKSEN (Rancid) -
Charlie’s fascinating story is told in his own unique style, taking the reader through his early years as a ‘war baby’, his time at boarding schools for misfit boys, his adventurous youth, his struggles and escapades as a bass player, his turbulent personal life as well as his incredible journey with the U.K. Subs, as a solo artist and with his many side-project bands.
Illustrated throughout with many unseen photos from his own collection, this will be without doubt, the most talked about punk rock book of the year.
The book boasts a wonderful Foreword written by Rancid’s Lars Frederiksen with the book’s stunning cover artwork being supplied by Steve Dann (Magpie Art), of which the original hangs in Charlie’s house.
Charlie Harper is one of the most respected and loved musicians to have come out of the 1977 punk explosion. Prior to forming the U.K. Subs in that seminal year, Charlie had busked around Europe in the sixties and played in numerous bands through the seventies. However, he eventually found fame with the Subs, building up a formidable, devoted fan following through his unrelenting love of gigging. Briefly hitting the charts and playing Top of the Pops multiple times, his indefatigable belief in punk as being the people's music has seen the U.K. Subs carry on to the present day. Many now refer to Charlie as 'The Godfather of Punk', a fitting moniker to one of the most likeable personalities who has stayed true to that DIY punk ethic. Charlie keeps on rocking, touring and creating. Ably supported and abetted by his wife Yuko, he never intends to let the punk-rock flame fade.
