SYNTHSTORM, a new synth-oriented label within the Concilium collective, is proud to present Under Cover of Darkness, a special all-covers collection from prolific synthwave kingpin CONFRONTATIONAL. Self-released digitally, Under Cover of Darkness shall be released on limited vinyl LP (with download card) and limited digipack as the inaugural release of SYNTHSTORM.
There is a thick red line that binds together the worlds of darkness and disco - a line that can be traced through some of the tracks that unsuspectingly topped international charts between 1975 and 1987, going straight from Goblin's "Deep Red" to Sabrina Salerno's "Boys." A story originated on the dancefloor through lyrics that, when read through a certain peculiar angle, attest to a number of severe implications. A wild ride into the night, ripe with possibilities, fear and excitement.
As such, Under Cover of Darkness is a tribute to the musicians and the sounds that set the canvas for CONFRONTATIONAL to exist: a dedication to those who paved the way.
Never one for short measures, Under Cover of Darkness sees CONFRONTATIONAL mainman Massimo Usai joined by a slew of crucial contributors who underline that thick red line ever deeper. Synth virtuoso and composer Cody Carpenter (son of director John Carpenter, co-author of the Lost Themes albums and the Halloween soundtrack) appears on two tracks: interpretations of The Cars' "Stranger Eyes" and Den Harrow's "Future Brain." Shred-guitarist Adrien Grousset, from French synthwave sensation Carpenter Brut, guests on lead singles "Happy Children" (originally by P. Lion) and "Animal Machine" (originally John Carpenter's "Christine"). Up-and-coming Italian singer Amedeo lends his vocals to "You're My Heart" (a reinterpretation of Modern Talking's "You're My Heart, You're My Soul"), and Swedish Italo-disco legend Tobias Bernstrup is featured on closing number "Summertime Love," a reinterpretation of the aforementioned Italo-disco classic "Boys."
Just earlier this year, the dystopian video for "Happy Children" debuted via NOISEY and NewRetroWave here:

A trip back in time and also into the future, Under Cover of Darkness is vintage CONFRONTATIONAL recast from the foundational stones of modern synthwave.
