'In a Rudie Mood' is yet another example of the musical diversity and wide range of the De-Phazz family.
Whether swing jazz, rock'n'roll, or 'rude German sampling'- everything moves on the base of reggae rhythms with a touch of ska, which brings us to the title of this album.
Leading the way is co-producer and drummer Oli Rubow, who, together with Eben Jones and Emily Zils (Eez), offers the next generation a platform to try their hand and gain experience in a playful way. The same goes for Jona Heckmann and Alex Weis, who work their magic in the De-Phazz kitchen with all kinds of flavorful spices. We listen to Sandie Wollasch, Ulf Kleiner, Marcus Bartelt, and Bernd Windisch with a session cover version that shows how a pointed lyric works just as well as a ballad as it does as reggae.
We meet old companions such as Andrew Murphy, who represents my long-standing connection to dub reggae, or Joo Kraus, who, with his virtuoso playing, colors everything in a familiar jazz blue. Also Oliver Leicht (Frankfurt Radio Big Band), who, with a different musical approach, once again confirms the De-Phazz mantra: Bringing together what doesn't necessarily belong together!
The 'Rudies' are synonymous here with the spread and fusion of authentic Caribbean rhythms (including 'dubbing') with our so-called Western beats. Arriving via England decades ago and drumming their way from there to the rest of Europe, proof that while music may have a geographical origin, it always vibrates freely through the atmosphere across all borders, 'ready to be mixed up'.
