What a debut! Death By Gong set such a bold exclamation mark with "Descalator" that you can confidently call it the indie / grunge / rock album of the year. The name Death By Gong may sound gloomy, but their debut album "Descalator" surprises with a decelerated yet powerful soundscape. The trio, consisting of Jobst M. Feit (Radare), Peter Voigtmann (Shrvl, ex-The Ocean) and Chris Breuer (Zahn, Heads.), deliver a gripping mixture of stoic groove, distorted guitars and cinematic atmosphere. Their music, which they themselves describe as "noise rock", combines raw energy with deep emotional moments. The album slowly builds up tension, as in the opening track "Troy Toy", which surprisingly unfolds in a synth finale. The songs move stylistically between genres such as grunge, post-punk and shoegaze, with each track developing its own dynamic. For example, "Heavy Air" comes across as a pounding noise breaker, while "Everything Is Given" strikes a cheerful note. The time the band takes for their musical development is particularly impressive. Tracks like "Angel Cake" unfold over almost ten minutes and invite you to dive deep into the multi-layered world of sound. Death By Gong play skillfully with reverb and subtle nuances, giving the music an almost meditative effect. "Descalator" is an album that builds up slowly but lingers for a long time - intense, gripping and full of emotional depth.
