One of the most recognisable names in all of jazz, Dizzy Gillespie’s contribution to the genre was invaluable to its development. A master trumpet player, renowned for the complexity of his improvisation, his unique sense of style and longevity of relevance - as well as his general good humour - Gillespie’s work had a profound effect on the popularisation of bebop during the mid-20th Century. The influence he provided to a generation of later legendary jazz performers, including Miles Davis, Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown and Lee Morgan, was profound, and he embraced a wide variety of styles and arrangements during his lifetime. Some of his finest work emerged during the late 1950s and early 1960s, when he was signed to Verve Records.
