Emil Ráste Kárlsen is one of the most prominent Sámi profiles today. With his impressive arsenal of talents and his unique and strong musical voice he has already made a huge impact in his early career. On April 17, Kárlsen is releasing his long-awaited solo debut album Nannámii. The title «Nannámii» translates to “towards the shore” or “towards firm ground”. The album takes the listener on a beautiful, touching and complex journey through reflection of identity and belonging.
Emil was born and raised in the multilingual community of Omasvuotna/Omasvunon/Storfjord near the borders between Norway, Sweden and Finland. He infuses his artistic practices with his family’s story and the history of his region. Having grown up in a heavily Norwegianized part of the coastal Sámi community, he has been a notable voice of reclaiming language and revitalizing the Sámi culture, mostly through his own music combined with the traditions of yoiking - one of Europe’s oldest vocal traditions still practiced today.
