Randy Newman’s second album 12 Songs was released in 1970 to enormous acclaim, as it gracefully eclipsed a somewhat patchy debut, and set the tone for Newman’s career thereafter. Whilst many of his singer-songwriter contemporaries adhered to the conventions of this emerging genre with confessional lovelorn tales, Newman’s compositions were marked by the satirical and political nature of his first-person character sketches, which established the narrative direction of much of his future output.
On the 21st August 1971 Randy Newman was found performing a solo set in New York, with Radio Station WPLJ on hand to brilliantly capture and broadcast this special performance live across the airwaves. Featured in full on this CD.
