Kentucky meets New Mills via Portland: Powerful UK '82 smash, the debut album by DEFIANT STATE from Somerset, KY is very reminiscent of CRIMINAL DAMAGE at first glance. In other words, you use identical blueprints: BLITZ, BLITZ, BLITZ. Nice update with steroids (the BLITZ cover “Nation on fire” fits perfectly).
Mode: Aggressive and angry. DEFIANT STATE play on the evil side of the coin, bulldozing with heavy equipment. The polyphonic rough-hewn singing is a guarantee of success. Gargled with nails, rinsed with MARLBORO. Comes wonderfully nasty and unwashed. Backed by a beefy, compact wall of sound, including double bass attacks and distorted bass runs in Lemmy style. Massive singalongs ensure a solid Oi! edge, DEFIANT STATE are confident in both styles. In addition, the OXBLOOD cover “Traitor” provides support here, also implemented in a very stylish manner.
Conclusion: An entertaining and intense street punk pleasure: 11 crisp songs in just under 30 minutes with top notch sound, perfectly staged by Bill Stevenson (DESCENDENTS, ALL, BLACK FLAG) in his BLASTING ROOM.
