Genesis occupy a unique place in rock history, having continually reinvented themselves while remaining one of the most successful and influential bands of their generation. Formed in Surrey in 1967, the group first established themselves as pioneers of progressive rock during the early 1970s with Peter Gabriel as frontman, before entering a new chapter following his departure in 1975. Drummer Phil Collins stepped seamlessly into the role of lead vocalist, while Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford remained the band's creative core. The later addition of Chester Thompson on drums and Daryl Stuermer on guitar for live performances enabled Genesis to faithfully recreate their increasingly ambitious studio recordings on stage, and by 1987 they had successfully transformed themselves from progressive rock innovators into one of the world's biggest bands.
Released in June 1986, Invisible Touch marked the commercial peak of Genesis' career. While retaining the sophisticated songwriting and musicianship that had long defined the band, the album embraced a brighter, more contemporary sound built around shimmering synthesisers, electronic textures and polished production. It yielded an extraordinary run of international hit singles and introduced Genesis to an even wider global audience.
To support the album, Genesis embarked upon the monumental Invisible Touch Tour, performing 112 concerts across North America, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand between September 1986 and July 1987. Captured at Osaka-jou Hall on 18 March 1987, the performance presented here stands among the finest of the entire tour. The band deliver a near-flawless performance, balancing the stadium-sized anthems of their contemporary catalogue with classic material from earlier eras, while Collins is in exceptional vocal form and the entire group perform with remarkable precision, confidence and energy. It is Genesis at the absolute height of their live powers.
