KISS have become one of rock’s most enduring cultural icons, recognised worldwide for their unforgettable imagery, anthemic songs and unwavering presence across five decades. From stadium tours to chart success and a global fan community that spans generations, their legacy has grown far beyond their origins in seventies New York, securing their place as a band whose influence and popularity refuse to fade.
By the late eighties the group had removed their iconic make up and entered what fans call the unmasking period, a time that saw them refocus on musicianship and contemporary hard rock. In 1992 they released Revenge, a tougher, darker album that revitalised their sound and reaffirmed their relevance in a changing musical landscape. It stands as one of the strongest entries from their post make up years.
The road to Revenge was marked by both creative renewal and personal upheaval. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley brought guitarist Bruce Kulick and drummer Eric Carr into the sessions, while also re-enlisting producer Bob Ezrin, whose earlier work with the band had become legendary. Tragically, Carr passed away during the making of the album, and Eric Singer stepped in to complete the sessions with professionalism and power. The result captured a band determined to honour their past while forging ahead.
