Prince’s return to the Montreux Jazz Festival on 18 July 2009 was met with intense anticipation. Announced at short notice and following a run of acclaimed live appearances, the prospect of two full shows on the same night set the festival abuzz. What unfolded across the early and late performances was nothing short of seismic, as Prince and his band took complete command of the Stravinski Auditorium, delivering two distinct and expansive statements that instantly entered Montreux legend.
The performances themselves are remarkable for both their virtuosity and imagination. Prince moves effortlessly across styles and moods, stretching songs, reworking arrangements and spotlighting the band with jazz-like freedom. Particularly special is the depth of the setlists, which draw on rarities, covers and lesser-played songs from across his vast back catalogue, giving longtime followers the thrill of rediscovery alongside moments of jaw-dropping musicianship that only Prince could deliver.
