Formed in Los Angeles in 1990, Tool quickly established themselves as one of the most original and uncompromising bands in modern rock. Featuring vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, drummer Danny Carey and bassist Paul D'Amour (who was soon replaced by Justin Chancellor), the group fused progressive rock, heavy metal and art rock into a distinctive sound unlike that of any of their contemporaries. Acclaimed for their intricate compositions, thought-provoking lyrics and visually ambitious live performances, Tool have earned multiple Grammy Awards and widespread critical acclaim while exerting a profound influence on generations of progressive and alternative metal artists.
Across landmark albums including Undertow (1993), Ænima (1996), Lateralus (2001) and 10,000 Days (2006), Tool continually expanded the boundaries of heavy music, combining complex time signatures, hypnotic rhythms and philosophical themes with uncompromising musicianship. Their refusal to follow industry convention only strengthened their reputation, cultivating an intensely loyal global following.
Following the release of 10,000 Days, the band would not issue another studio album for more than a decade. Despite this, Tool continued to tour, embarking on a short North American summer run in 2010. With relatively few performances scheduled, each concert became a major event for fans, showcasing a band still operating at the height of its powers. Among these appearances, the performance captured at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on 19th July 2010 stands as one of the tour's defining moments, with Tool delivering a commanding and deeply immersive set before an ecstatic hometown audience.
