Formed in Dublin in 1976, U2 emerged from the post-punk era with a sound defined by soaring guitar textures, spiritual lyricism and a fierce commitment to social justice. With Bono’s unmistakable vocals, The Edge’s innovative guitar work, Adam Clayton’s melodic basslines and Larry Mullen Jr’s innovative drumming, the band quickly rose to global prominence. Since their inception, U2 have sold over 150 million records, won 22 Grammy Awards, and become one of the most influential rock acts of all time.
By 2011, U2 had long since cemented their legacy with a formidable discography that included The Joshua Tree (1987), Achtung Baby (1991) and All That You Can’t Leave Behind (2000), amongst many others. Their 360° Tour, launched in 2009, became the highest-grossing tour in history. After decades at the forefront of global music and activism, the band were finally set to headline Glastonbury – a long-awaited moment following their cancelled 2010 appearance due to Bono’s back injury.
